GUPSA News Update

29 Oct

With classes coming to an end this week, you might be wondering what’s happening with some of GUPSA’s important services for postgraduates, particularly the legal advice service and the editing service.

Legal advice
The legal advice service is continuing weekly through to the last week of the exam period in week 16. The service will be open each Thursday afternoon 2:30pm-4:30pm, N28 Room 0.05 (Meeting Room 1), Nathan campus. No appointment is necessary, it’s a free walk-in service, providing free legal advice on a range of issues including: tenancy, workplace issues/entitlements, minor fines, minor criminal activity, and de facto/family issues. It does not deal with visa issues. The last day the service will operate this year will be Thursday 20 November.

Editing service
GUPSA’s editing service will continue through the summer period, except when the university closes down in late December for the Christmas-New Year break. With the start of summer semester on 1 December, all postgraduate students can have two consultations with the editor through to the end of February next year. For each consultation you may submit up to 4000 words of writing to our editor, Evie, who will correct any grammatical or stylistic errors in the text. She will then meet with you in person to discuss the kinds of errors that are present, and how to avoid making them in future. For external or remote students, we can make use of Skype, email, telephone, and the postal system. The feedback you receive will be confidential, non-judgemental, and constructive. Please note, this is a part-time service so please allow a one-week turnaround, or longer if there is heavy demand. Click here for more information or contact our Support Officer, Michael Carden.

Party time
Don’t forget our End of Semester Party at the Unibar on Thursday 6 November. If you’re coming (and we know you are), we need you to RSVP for catering purposes so please email Michael by 5pm Monday 3 November to register and let him know any dietary requirements you have. If you are vegan or require gluten free food then then you really must register that for us to get the catering right for you. There’ll be one more GUPSA social event to come, our end of year Christmas party in December and we’ll be letting you know about that later in November.
