Brisbane Remembers Community Picnic
This Saturday 9 May 2015, GUPSA, together with the Brisbane Student and Community Alliance and Reclaim the Night, are holding a community picnic and memorial event at Kurilpa Park, South Brisbane, 2:30- 5:30pm, for students and the general public, both to honour and commemorate the victims of street violence in our communities, and to raise awareness about safety.
Griffith University Postgraduate Students Association has strongly advocated with the Brisbane City Council and other stakeholders on this matter so students and the general public can feel they live in a safe community. The event will be a colourful, family-friendly event where you can have a BYO picnic in the park, and start a conversation about safety in our streets. Bring a picnic basket and a blanket. The afternoon will also include a 1-hour yoga/meditation session (gold coin donation); all the monies collected will go to the Daisy Chain Foundation, the official charity of the Queensland Homicide Victims Support Group.
Following these activities, there will be a formal commemoration of victims of street violence.
The community picnic will include high-profile speakers, such as White Ribbon Australia Ambassador Police Commissioner Ian Stewart.
It’s an open invitation to you, your friends and family, so we hope to see you on Saturday!
