GUPSA One-day writing retreat, Friday 25 November 2016

Calling all writers! Are you currently working on your thesis chapter or a journal article? Do you need some motivation and assistance to boost your writing? If so, you are welcome to join us at a one-day writing retreat at Nathan’s Eco Centre (N68) on Friday 25 November.

The event is limited, on a “first comes first served”, to 40 postgraduate Griffith students basis who are currently working on their PhD/Master’s thesis or a journal article. The retreat will comprise time allocated to independent writing sessions supplemented by two short presentations delivered by Griffith staff during morning and afternoon tea breaks. A Griffith academic and Griffith English Language Institute (GELI) tutor will also be available for individual consultations concerning writing and structure. Lunch, morning and afternoon tea will be provided.

You must register for the retreat by 21 November and you can do so here. Registrations close 21 November or if we reach 40 before then.

The writing retreat will take place on Friday 25 November between 9am and 5pm.

Please arrive by 8:45 for a 9am start.

The program for the day is as follows:

9:00-10:30 Plan for the day and Writing session / Individual consultations
10:30-11:15 Morning tea and a short talk about Academic Writing presented by John Smith (Assistant Director of Studies at GELI)
11:15-13:00 Writing session / Individual consultations
13:00-13:45 Lunch
13:45-15:00 Writing session / Individual consultations
15:00-15:45 Afternoon tea and a short talk about editing presented by Dr Alana Piper (Research Fellow at Griffith Criminology Institute)
15:45-17:00 Writing session / Individual consultations

What you need:

  • A clear idea for writing at the retreat (you will need to provide a brief description of the plan upon registration)
  • Laptop, charging cable
  • Notes, any reading material
  • Extension cord and power board if available
  • A jumper in case it gets cold
  • Anything else you may need for comfortable writing
